To create a ball speed that is required of tour greens, you need to fill the turf fibers with sand and top dress right up to the top of the fibers. At that point, you are putting almost entirely on sand and not the fibers. In time, the sand will settle or wash out, and your sand-filled green will become much slower. Real grass putting greens are very expensive to construct and maintain. They require almost daily mowing and watering; they need frequent fertilizing, veticutting, winter overseeding, aerating, and an occasional application of sand and top dressing. You need a special expensive tiff style mower to cut the blades of grass short enough to putt.
